LOCAL LEGENDS

I grew up across the street from the marina and wooden boats fascinated me. By the time I was 6 years old I was learning the craft of wooden boat building.

The panache of a classic wooden boat is unrivaled by any other watercraft says Joe Norton, whose family has been building boats since the late 1800s.

“I grew up around these boats right from the beginning,” says the lifelong Green Lake resident. “I was doomed,” he jokes.

But the allure of a wooden boat goes beyond aesthetics—the vessels are lighter and stronger, offering a smoother ride. Growing up, Norton volunteered to sweep floors and shim into tight spaces for repairs just to be near the watercraft he loved.

“We were ever middle class, at best,” Norton says of his family. “If you wanted a boat, you had to build it.”

As the founder of Norton Boat Works, Norton has built and restored hundreds of the wooden boats, including many world champions, that have become synonymous with Green Lake. To share this passion with the public, Norton Boat Works teaches individuals the craft of boat building. Visit nortonboatworks.com to learn more.
